Liverpool hosted Arsenal in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night. They could have gone into the rematch in a better position, but in the end they only managed a goalless draw. Takumi Minamino burned a great chance.

The semi-final of the Carabao Cup offered an interesting battle between Liverpool and Arsenal. In the first match played at Anfield, everything went in the home team’s favour from the opening whistle.

In the ninth minute Arsenal had to make their first substitution due to injury, and in the 24th minute Granit Xhaka was sent off after his foul stopped a very promising break.

Liverpool played outnumbered for more than an hour. In addition, Arsenal had to think about the fact that they have a derby with the hated Tottenham at the weekend. But it didn’t stick to the Reds players at all.

Although they finished the game having kept the ball on the hoof 77% of the time and sent 17 shooting attempts, they did not score a goal and only one shot went between the three posts. So the clear dominance came to nothing.

However, Takumi Minamino could have changed the score in the 89th minute, but failed to convert a huge chance. Instead of a delicate touch that could have put the ball into the almost empty net, he decided to flick the ball on.

Obviously, it was not an easy situation, but Liverpool can be very sorry nonetheless. For they could have taken a goal lead into the rematch, but this way everything is still as open as possible.
