PSG made it through to the opening eight of the Champions League, beating Real Sociedad 2-0 at home. The visitors from the Basque Country were the better side in the first half. But were brought down by Kylian Mbappé shot after a change of sides. Bradley Barcola added an insurance goal. Bayern, meanwhile, fell to Lazio Rome.
On the away side, striker André Silva fired in the first minute, his right-footed shot from the edge of the box just missing the right post. On the other side, Kylian Mbappé ran at the goalkeeper alone, but Alex Remiro made a great save.
Sociedad continued to rage, with another standard situation having to be snuffed out at the last moment by the home defence. In the first 22 minutes, Takefusa Kubo still headed into the side netting and Silva headed just over. A sympathetic start from the underdog.
It wasn’t until the 34th minute that the home side threatened, but Bradley Barcola headed over the Spanish side’s goal. Mikel Merino was already celebrating in the first half, but his shot from 25 yards only hit Gianluigi Donnarumma’s crossbar.
PSG dominated the second half, Mbappé opened the scoring
After a poor performance by the home team, the game was scoreless. After the change of sides, Paris were more active. As if their players realised that a rematch on Basque soil could be quite a tough task.
And in the 57th minute, Kylian Mbappé celebrated, finishing the signal after a corner kick. And the same player hit the bar six minutes later, with the visiting goalkeeper having a hand in it. As his shot from the whitewash was cleared out for a corner.
In the 71st minute, Princes Park was already celebrating, with Barcola getting the ball into the net between the goalkeeper’s legs. Paris controlled the game from the first goal onwards and did not let their opponents get anywhere. The blanket fell on San Sebastian.
Marco Asensio could have increased the lead in the end, but he was saved by the goalkeeper. On the other side, Jon Pacheco took an inaccurate shot and will go into the rematch in Spain with a two-goal lead. The rematch is scheduled for the beginning of March.
Bayern Munich fell to Lazio Rome 0-1 in the corresponding match. The match was decided by Ciro Immobile, who took a penalty kick after a foul by Dayot Upamecan on Gustav Isaksen. The Frenchman did not finish the match and received a red card.
