Amazing gesture from Real to Liverpool! The Reds’ anthem was played after the game at the Bernabéu, it was a way of paying respect
At today’s elite level, prestige and huge money are at stake, and hatred or dislike is not far away. That’s why it’s very nice to see two such big clubs show each other such respect, like Real Madrid and Liverpool.
At today’s elite level, prestige and huge money are at stake and hatred or dislike is not far away. That’s why it’s very nice to see two such big clubs show each other such respect, like Real Madrid and Liverpool.
Although at football level Real Madrid have clearly had the upper hand in recent years, winning 7 of their last 8 games, Liverpool have a lot of respect for their Spanish counterpart.
In fact, before the first match, Real Madrid legend and honorary president Amancio passed away in football heaven, so Liverpool decided to pay respect to his greatness.
Before the game, Kenny Dalglish laid a white flower in front of the Real Madrid fans and a minute’s silence was held at Anfield.
The Los Blancos fans gave Dalglish and the club a big round of applause and thanks, but the respect expressed didn’t stop there. Real rolled on the pitch and destroyed the home side 5-2. But there was no contempt, whistling or early exit at Anfield Road.
On the contrary, when Luka Modric came on just before the end, the Reds fans gave him a standing ovation. On his departure, even the home fans applauded the away side, who returned the applause and started chanting “Liverpool, Liverpool”.
The respect between the two teams remained even after the rematch, which Real Madrid won 1:0. As a thank you for the gesture with Dalglish, after the final whistle, the Royal Club played Liverpool’s anthem, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, over the loudspeakers instead of their celebratory anthem.
Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp also praised it highly. “YNWA at the Bernabéu? It’s a very nice gesture. Real Madrid is a great club, we are happy to have faced them,” the German coach said in a post-match interview.
