Manchester City won the 23rd round of the Premier League at home against Burnley 3-1. The hero of the match was two-goal Argentine Julian Alvarez, who scored the first two goals for the Citizens.
Julian Alvarez the hero against Burnley
As expected, Manchester were more active from the start, but Burnley often got into quick counter-attacks. However, none of them made it to the end and the opponents struck. Julian Alvarez headed home after a Matheus Nunes centre.
Kevin de Bruyne could have doubled the lead in the 19th minute, but his attempt was blocked by the Burnley defence. Three minutes later, the Belgian registered an assist as Alvarez headed his pass to the left post. Citizens got the signal from a direct kick.
In the 27th minute, Nunes fired, but an excellent save was pulled off by former Manchester City player James Trafford. Then Joško Gvardiol took a shot and just missed the right post.
In the second half, the Citizens protected their lead
The first half was capped off by Lyle Foster’s finish, but the visitors’ first shot didn’t go between the three sticks and they went into the box with a 2-0 lead. After the change of sides, the Citizens made a great start and in the opening minute Rodri sent the ball to the right post.
Zeki Amdouni then tried to reduce the deficit, but the home defence knocked his shot down with a block. On the other side, the scenario was repeated in the 51st minute, this time Burnley’s defence thwarted Phil Foden’s shot.
Amdouni and Foden also had subsequent chances on either side, but neither posed a real threat. Then the recovered goalkeeper Ederson had to make his first appearance, but Hjalmar Ekdal’s attempt was cleared.
Ameen Al Dakhil managed to at least adjust the score to 1:3. Burnley remain in the relegation zone, seven points behind 17th-placed Luton. Manchester are second, five points behind Liverpool and one game in hand.
