Alexander Sorloth is heading to Atlético Madrid after a successful season. Does he have anything to offer the club?
Alexander Sorloth is very close to signing a contract at Atlético Madrid. He is undergoing a medical in the Spanish capital, after which he could officially become a player of the 4th best team from last season’s La Liga. But is he enough reinforcement for Diego Simeone?

Sorloth on his way to Atlético Madrid
Just one last step separates the tall Norwegian striker from signing with Atlético Madrid. The side from the Spanish capital is expected to pay Villarreal more than €30 million for Sorloth if he signs a contract. This would make him the club’s second signing of the year after Robin Le Normand.
The 28-year-old striker impressed Simeone especially last season, in which he scored 26 goals and 6 assists in 41 games. He should thus be an adequate replacement for the outgoing Alvaro Morata, who was acquired for €13 million by AC Milan.
Last season
However, we are talking about one successful season. In the 2022/23 edition, the Norwegian striker managed to score 16 goals in 47 games. The season before that, he even scored just 8 accurate shots in 44 games.
The previous seasons were not very good either. Thus, the last time he had a successful season was in Trabzonspor, specifically in the 2019/20 season, which was also recognized by Sparta Prague, for whom he scored a goal in both matches. He eventually finished the season with 33 accurate goals in 49 games.
Sorloth certainly has his quality, but he has never been able to make a proper impact at the highest level until last season. Villarreal’s game simply suited him, as coach Marcelino, who arrived last November, was able to use his potential to the full.
The Norwegian striker is a very strong player, but he is very quick for his height and weight. He also plays well with his weaker right foot. He is always dangerous in the penalty area and on runs. In addition, one could say that he is maturing like wine, which he will now have to confirm at Atlético if the transfer actually happens.
However, he is definitely an adequate replacement for Morata. Sorloth can finally really shine and Atlético could be the ideal team for him.
