Alexander Bublik celebrated his 25th birthday in June this year. At the moment, he can be found at the 43rd place in the ATP rankings. However, this is due to his lack of motivation in some tournaments, otherwise he would undoubtedly have a better position.
We could see his qualities this year for example at the tournament in Montpellier, France, where he managed to beat Griekspoor, Bautista-Agut or Zverev. In addition, he has beaten Ruud, Wawrinka and Tiafoe.
He has already played two matches in Florence. In the first one he faced Cristian Garin, who lost after 5:7 and 2:6. In the second round, the opponent of the tournament’s number seven was Frenchman Corentin Moutet. Bublik showed a great performance especially on his own serve, winning 97% of the balls (37 out of 38) after the first serve.
His opponent on Friday will be the 23-year-old American Jeffrey John Wolf. He is enjoying a breakthrough season, having reached the top 100 of the ATP rankings for the first time ever. He is currently ranked 75th.
Wolf has found a successful recipe against Shapovalov, Daniel, Rune and Bautista-Agut this year. In Florence, he knocked out the home team’s Maestrelli at the start of the event, after which he also dealt with the tournament’s number four Maxim Cressy.
On Friday, the two players will face each other for the second time. The first one took place in 2019 during the qualification in Cincinnati, which Wolf won after 6:3 and 6:3 sets. However, the indoor conditions are much more suitable for Bublik, who is the favourite to advance.
