The quarter-finals of the tournament in Newport, USA, will feature a duel between Alexander Bublik and Andy Murray. The British tennis player is a slight favourite to advance to the top four, but he will not have an easy job.
Alexander Bublik is currently ranked 42nd in the ATP rankings. However, in February this year, the 25-year-old Kazakh tennis player was at the 30th position, which is his career high. A great merit for this was the triumph at the tournament in Montpellier.
On grass, Bublik has a record of seven wins and four losses this year. At Wimbledon, he reached the third round, where he fell to Frances Tiafoe in four sets. In Newport, he took on the home team’s Jack Sock.
His opponent on Thursday will be Andy Murray. The former world number one is currently ranked 52nd in the ATP rankings. However, he is still proving that he does not belong to the old iron, as evidenced by the scalps of Tsitsipas and Kyrgios.
However, a better result was expected at Wimbledon, where he had the support of the home crowd. He was eliminated in the second round, where he lost to American John Isner after 4::6, 6::7, 7::6, 4::6.
Although he is the number six seed in Newport, he still had to get into action in the first round. There he beat Querrey 6::2 and 6::0 in less than an hour. In the eighth round he met Max Purcell, winner of this year’s Wimbledon doubles.
A similar performance to Querrey was expected, but the opposite was the reality. The thirty-five year old Briton was 6: 4, 2: 0 and all signs pointed to his demise. Murray has improved since then and only lost one game in the rest of the match.
However, he spent almost two and a half hours on court, which at his advanced age can take a toll on his physical readiness. He and Bublik are 3-1 up on each other, but the Kazakh will certainly not be without a chance to advance. Especially if his first serve goes well.
We can expect to see only two sets in the match. In fact, in none of the previous matches did it happen that both players won at least a set.
