Alex De Minaur is a 23-year-old Australian tennis player. He is currently ranked 31st in the ATP rankings. Last June, however, the confidant of coach Adolfo Guttierrez was ranked 15th.
In the current season he has already beaten Matteo Berrettini, Ugo Humbert and Marton Fucsovics. During his opening appearance in Indian Wells, he came up against compatriot John Millman, whom he defeated in sets 7: 6 and 6: 3.
His opponent on Tuesday will be twenty-four-year-old American Tommy Paul. He is currently 39th in the ATP rankings. The former world junior number three has the best record on hard court.
In 2022, he has already found a recipe for Taro Daniel, Frances Tiafoe, Dusan Lajovic or Matteo Berrettini. He has already had two encounters in Indian Wells – first defeating Mikhail Kukushkin, then scalping Alexander Zverev.
So Paul is a very dangerous opponent on home soil. He proved it last year when he knocked out Feliciano Lopez, Dusan Lajovic and Andrey Rublev. He was only beaten in the eighth round by future champion Cameron Norrie.
So what’s your bet? This will be the first match in which we would be hard pressed to find a clear favourite to advance to the top 16. However, thanks to the home crowd, Tommy Paul will have a slight advantage and if he follows up his performance from Sunday night, he could replicate the result from last year.
