While everyone is keeping an eye on the situation surrounding Oscar Piastri’s future, Williams has extended the contract of Alexander Albon. The 26-year-old will not only be seen at Williams next year, as Williams is talking about a multi-year deal.

The former Red Bull driver Albon returned to Formula 1 as a permanent Williams driver in 2022 after a one-year break and has been convincing so far. Albon is clearly in control of the team’s battle with Latifi.

Today’s announcement by Williams may have been a reaction to the situation surrounding the Alpine stable and Oscar Piastri. The reigning Formula 2 champion has long been a leading candidate for the Williams seat in the 2023 season.

Albon also made fun of Oscar Piastri on Twitter, paraphrasing his reaction to the Alpine announcement.

“Williams Racing issued a press release this afternoon that I will be driving for them next year. That’s right. I signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I’ll be driving for Williams next year.”

Alex is a great driver and a valued member of the Williams Racing team, so we are happy to confirm that we will be working with him long-term,” said Jost Capito.

It is not yet known who will become Albon’s co-driver at Williams next season. The contract with his current teammate Nicholas Latifi expires at the end of 2022. The Canadian’s poor performance makes staying at Williams unlikely.
