Alcaraz is writing history. The Spaniard dominates the French Open and completes a luxurious Grand Slam collection

Even before the start of the final match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, it was clear that the French Open would have a new champion. Alcaraz was eager to win a grand slam on the last surface he had not yet triumphed on. Zverev, on the other hand, had the opportunity to win his first Grand Slam title. How did the anticipated duel between the two go?

A huge challenge for both players

Of course, winning a Grand Slam tournament is always a huge achievement. In this year’s Roland Garros final, there was a bit more at stake.

For both participants in Sunday’s final, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, this duel meant a chance to win a maiden French Open title. And not only that.

Third seed Alcaraz had a chance to write his name in golden letters in tennis history. The twenty-one-year-old tennis player had the chance to be the youngest player in history to win a major on all surfaces.

Last year, the Spaniard triumphed on Wimbledon grass. A year earlier, he won the US open on concrete. Paris clay has been missing from his collection so far. Moreover, he has never come away from a major final as the losing player. And before the final, he was considered the clear favorite.

Zverev was one step away from winning his first Grand Slam title. Symbolically, at the place where he was badly injured two years ago in the semi-final against Nadal, putting a significant damper on his career.

Events off the tennis courts were certainly a boost for Zverev. In recent days, he has shrugged off the burden of a court hearing with his ex-girlfriend.

The progress of the final match

Zverev started the match with two double faults in a row and that seemed to symbolize the opening of the duel. Errors dominated the first games. Both tennis players lost their serves. The following improvement in the game was more pronounced for the favourite. Alcaraz got two more serves from the German and the first set was his.

The second set was marked by an improvement of the German tennis player. He cut down on unforced errors and in turn added great forehand shots. He returned the same coin to Alcaraz and thanks to two break points he took the second set 6: 2.

The fight for the third set was an advertisement for tennis. A fired-up Alcaraz gained the upper hand, but Zverev, with a run of five games in a row, came within a set of his dream title.

The fourth set was the shortest of all. The more varied tennis of the Spanish player celebrated the success. Thus, the winner of the French Open 2025 had to be decided in the fifth set.

The deciding set

Alcaraz went into it as best he could. He soon broke the Hamburg native’s serve again, confirming his amazing record in long matches.

Zverev fought hard, but Alcaraz was simply better in the decisive moments. In the seventh game, the Spaniard secured a luxurious lead with his second break and after four and a quarter hours he went on to serve for the French Open title.

He didn’t falter and made his big dream come true. He emulated his coach Ferrerro and won his third Grand Slam final. Alcaraz has written golden letters in the history of tennis, being the youngest player to win a major title with all kinds of surfaces.
