Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has hit the ATP circuit like a hurricane, but his recent results have remained behind expectations. How long will he take a break from tennis and what are his plans for the rest of the tennis season?
The first tennis event Carlos Alcaraz attended this year was a great success. The winner of last year’s US Open triumphed on the clay in Buenos Aires and started an impressive streak.
In ten tournaments, including the French Open and Wimbledon, he has only once failed to reach at least the semi-finals. In Indian Wells, Barcelona, Madrid, Queen’s Club and also on the legendary grass of the All England Club, he was unbeatable.
He managed to occupy the throne of the ATP rankings for a while. But the summer season brought rather less significant performances, although the final with Djokovic in Cincinnati certainly met the highest standards.
Setbacks in China and the break
Recent weeks have already brought downright disappointments on Chinese soil. In Beijing, the Italian Sinner overcame Alcaraz in two sets, and for the second time this year. At the Masters in Shanghai, the 20-year-old Spaniard didn’t even make it past the eighth round.
The reaction was not long in coming. Alcaraz and his team decided to take a complete break from tennis for a week. The current world number two will return to training this Wednesday.
Upcoming plans and goals
The Wimbledon winner would like to get back to the very top. He confirms that his primary goal is to get back to the world number one position.
That position at the moment belongs to Novak Djokovic, and by a considerable margin. The Spaniard can reduce it at the Basel tournament. The tournament starts on 23 October.
Conclusion
A break from tennis is definitely a good choice in this situation. The question is whether it will be enough for the Spaniard to regain physical and mental strength.
He will hardly succeed at the “Five Hundred” in Basel or at the subsequent Masters in Paris without proper form. However, we can believe that Alcaraz will get back to adequate form.
