Jordi Alba has said in a recent interview that he would like to stay at Barcelona until 2024, when his current contract at the Catalan club expires, and he is not considering an earlier departure.
Barcelona is currently going through a generational change and there is a question mark hanging over some players regarding their future. One of them is also the right-back Jordi Alba.
These doubts are quite logical. A few weeks ago Gerard Piqué left the club, who was the leader of the team for a long time. Coach Xavi is relying more and more on younger players, so in turn more experienced players are spending more time on the bench.
This has caught up with Piqué, for example, and speculation is rife about Roberto and Busquets leaving. The growing criticism from fans is also contributing to this. They undoubtedly recognise their legends, but they themselves see that their contribution to the team is not as great as it used to be.
Alba is in a similar situation. He is now 33 years old, but he must be satisfied with his workload. However, many fans would prefer to see a younger midfielder in his place.
But according to the Spanish defender, he is not going to leave. “I have a contract at Barcelona and I would like to fulfil it until 2024,” Alba told Cadena SER.
He still believes he has something to offer the team. “I have earned respect. If I see that I am not ready to play for Barcelona, I will be the first to consider leaving the club,” Alba added towards the fans.
For many, it may be presumptuous to say that Alba will stay at the club for two more years. After all, he will be 35 years old at the time of his contract termination and cannot be expected to play regularly in that time.
He is already often missing from the line-up despite the reinforcements of Alejandro Balde and Marc Alonso. So it cannot be ruled out that the scenario that Piqué experienced will not be repeated.
