Back then, Lucas Moura’s famous goal in the set-up destroyed Ajax’s dreams of reaching the Champions League final. But after two years where Ajax couldn’t even make it out of the group, the team is back on top.
While the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong are no longer in the team, the traditional club has found its footing among other players. So who is actually behind its success?
Sébastien Haller
This transfer has been a real success for Ajax. The burly striker only joined the team last winter, when the management didn’t hesitate to pay a sum of just under €23 million for him.
The management of the Dutch hegemon, however, knew very well what they were doing and they were sure that the club would be able to bring Haller back to world-class form after his failed engagement at West Ham.
And they did. The Ivory Coast international has found his lost form from Frankfurt. He has already contributed a whopping nine goals or assists in this year’s Champions League, something only Robert Lewandowski has managed.
Dusan Tadic
the 32-year-old Serbian is already familiar to fans of European football through his already oft-mentioned Champions League campaign in the 2018/19 season. He is one of the few players who has remained in the team to this day.
The former Southampton of England player has been delivering excellent performances in the team for a long time, so his form in the Champions League is definitely not surprising for the fans.
His performances are well demonstrated by the statistics from the domestic competition, where his goals and assists are regularly in double figures.
Erik Ten Hag
A coach that almost every top European team is looking for today. He has won over fans with his attractive football and great results. It is extremely difficult to imagine the Ajax of today without him. However, it’s only a matter of time before a top team tempts him with an offer.
The former Bayern reserve coach has worked his way up to the Dutch hegemon via Utrecht. In his second season, he managed to get the team to the semi-finals of the Champions League. In the Eredivisie, he has already won 3 titles with the team.
