Ajax have banned fans from bringing signs asking for their club’s jerseys to the Johan Cruyff Arena. This came after the Dutch champions saw an increase in the number of supporters taking them to matches.
Dutch media reported on Tuesday that Ajax had ordered its fans to no longer wear cardboard signs to the stadium.
Ajax told the Ajax Supporters Association that they had noticed an increasing number of such signs at matches, which were mostly held by children.
This led to fans accusing their favourites of arrogance after they just walked past supporters without handing them their jerseys.
Ajax also claims that the signs, which are usually made of cardboard, pose a fire hazard.
In addition, there have been increasingly frequent cases of children receiving a jersey from their favourite player, which the parents then tried to sell for as much money as possible on the internet.
Already during Saturday’s Dutch Super Cup match between Ajax and PSV, several signs were confiscated at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Many football fans on Twitter supported the ban.
“Embarrassing that this is happening and embarrassing that it is grown men/women, great decision,” wrote one supporter on Twitter.
Another added: “It should be compulsory at every club.”
