Champions League
Ajax and Benfica, a clash of teams with a great history and an excellent academy. Who will advance?
The 8-final between Ajax and Benfica is somewhat overlooked, mainly due to the more attractive clash between Manchester United and Atlético Madrid being played at the same time. However, the Dutch-Portuguese clash also has something to offer.
The 8-final between Ajax and Benfica is somewhat overlooked, mainly due to the more attractive clash between Manchester United and Atlético Madrid being played at the same time. However, the Dutch-Portuguese clash also has something to offer.
It is a clash between two teams with amazing academies that have produced many football icons. The biggest legends are probably Eusébio on Benfica’s side and Johan Cruijff on Ajax’s side.
Even at the moment, however, both academies are churning out some talents into world football. For example, there are three Benfica graduates, João Cancelo, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva, all at Manchester City. João Felix is playing for Atlético Madrid.
Ajax boasts Mathijs De Ligt, Frank De Jong and Donny van de Beek.
To celebrate the meeting of two clubs with a huge history and great academies, Ajax have prepared the perfect video before the first duel.
And although Ajax were the clear favourites, the first match at Estadio Da Luz ended in a 2-2 draw. The Dutch thus lost points for the first time in this year’s Champions League, having won six times in the regular group.
The rematch will not be easy, although the home environment could give them an advantage. Which historic team will go through to the quarter-finals?
