Manchester City had the Champions League final in their hands last season. The entire 180 minutes of the double header. But in the set-up of the rematch, magical things began to happen.
Real Madrid sent on Rodrygo, who scored two goals in two minutes to level the score and send the game into extra time. There, Karim Benzema made the difference.
The Citizens were so stunned by the home side’s turnaround at the Santiago Bernabéu that they had no time to react.
But fate brought the two sides together again in the Champions League semi-finals a year later. This time, the Citizens go into the match with a new weapon – Erling Haaland.
“It’s a rematch with Real Madrid for us. We’re going for it. We are very confident and I think we will qualify,” said Bernardo Silva after the match against Bayern.
The first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu is scheduled for May 9, with the rematch a week later at the Etihad Stadium on May 17.
Manchester City will have to splinter their forces in the fight for the Premier League, Real Madrid can now focus more or less only on the Champions League. Only on May 6, the weekend before the first duel, it faces the Copa del Rey final against Osasuna.
