Czech goalkeeper Tomas Koubek won the Bundesliga this weekend. He could experience this feeling again after more than three years. Moreover, he topped off his performance with a clean sheet.
Koubek came to Augsburg from Rennes in the summer of 2019 with great expectations and with the calling card of one of the best goalkeepers in the French league. However, he never showed his potential in Augsburg.
In his first season in Germany, he always scored until the 24th round with one exception. After that, the coaches needed to give the team a boost and so the Czech goalkeeper moved into the number two role.
In the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons, the Hradec Králové native did not make a single Bundesliga appearance. Rafał Gikiewicz has been consistently performing well and has not missed a game due to health problems.
In the current season, the Polish goalkeeper’s health caught up with him and Koubek finally got his chance. In the autumn, he replaced Gikiewicz four times and there were two losses and two draws.
Koubek has also played four games in the spring and the last one was his first Bundesliga win since 17 December 2019, when Augsburg beat Fortuna Düsseldorf, now in the second league, 3-0.
At the weekend, Augsburg took on top-four contender Union Berlin, beating them 1: 0. Koubek thus framed his long winless streak with a clean sweep.
The Czech goalkeeper is very popular in the team not only because of the way he has coped with the role of the long-term number two goalkeeper. According to his coach and teammates, he has been a true professional over the past three years and has never stopped working hard.
Dutch stopper Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, Augsburg’s captain, said of Koubek that he is a great fighter who never gives up on anything.
For his part, Augsburg coach Enrico Maaßen said that Koubek is improving match by match and with Gikiewicz injured, he can play a key role in the fight to save the Bundesliga.
