Adjourned! Atalanta vs Villarreal will not be played due to snowstorm
A rather unprecedented phenomenon happened in the last round of the Champions League group stage. The match between Atalanta and Villarreal was postponed, the culprit being a snowstorm that did not let up and the match would not have been very regular.
A rather unprecedented phenomenon happened in the last round of the Champions League group stage. The match between Atalanta and Villarreal was postponed, the culprit being a snowstorm that did not let up and the match would not have been very regular.
The snowstorm caused the postponement of Atalanta’s clash with Villarreal, which was due to take place on Wednesday at 9pm.
It snowed so heavily in Bergamo that it was decided that the state of the pitch was not regular enough to allow such an important match to progress to the next stage of the Champions League.
The match of Atalanta, still third and only one point behind second-placed Villarreal, will be played tomorrow, Thursday 9 December.
The kick-off has still not been set. Reports that the match might not be played have been going on for some time, so the decision was not too difficult.
So what can we look forward to on Thursday? Atalanta must win at home if they want to continue their Champions League journey.
In the event of a draw and a loss, they will then head to the Europa League, that is if nothing unexpected happens in Manchester United’s match against Young Boys Bern.
