Adidas, the sportswear company that has built a major name for itself in the world of sports, has severed its alliance with the Russian Football Federation. The reason is the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Adidas, which is a major sponsor of not only many sports clubs across a variety of sports, has become the latest major brand to sever its relationship with the Russian Football Federation (RFS) during the Russian army’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russia invaded neighbouring Ukraine on Thursday last week, sparking widespread condemnation across the world. Serious political, economic and sporting sanctions have resulted.
After several other major companies separated themselves from their associations with the country, sports giant Adidas followed suit. The latter has been a long-time partner of the Russian Football Federation.
According to a statement by Reuters on its Twitter account, Adidas confirmed that it was severing all ties with the RFS. It is not yet clear whether the break is irreversible or only temporary.
Adidas, which is a sponsor of many football clubs, leagues or associations, is a partner of Moscow club Lokomotiv in addition to the Russian Football Federation. We can therefore expect a similar fate for this club.
The continuing list of sporting sanctions against Russia is likely to grow in the current crisis, with the country already having suspended participation in club and national football on the international stage.
