For the second numbered UFC tournament this year, combat sports fans could watch in the early hours of Sunday.
The main card of UFC 271 opened with an attractive stand-up fight between Bobby Green and Nasrat Haqparast. Green showed experience and a good eye in the bout, being more active and, most importantly, more accurate, which allowed him to score a victory on points.
Renato Moicano took care of the first early end to the main card, as after some good and clean punches in the second round, he was able to get Alexander Hernandez to the ground, where he applied a choke that Hernandez tapped out.
Jared Cannonier provided an awesome reversal in the third fight of the main card. In the first round, Derek Brunson was able to land a great shot to send him to the ground, Cannonier even sustained a clean choke as he was saved by the end of the round.
However, it was Cannonier who dominated the second round, as he was able to knock Brunson down by TKO after a few hard punches. After the win, he asked for a title shot.
The heavyweight clash then provided probably the biggest surprise on the entire main card. Derrick Lewis took on Tai Tuivasa, but was knocked out in the second round. This is a big win for Tuivasa, and it could move him really high in the heavyweight rankings.
Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker were the highlights of the night. The reigning champion didn’t allow any surprises, however, winning on points and it was a fairly even match. Whittaker delivered four takedowns, but Adesanya was more accurate in his stance and had more significant strikes.
Whittaker was also able to land good shots in spots, however, and it was he who went to the ground after hitting his opponent once in the fight. His performance was certainly affected by the fact that Adesanya landed 29 leg kicks which the Australian felt very well.
With Adesanya holding the second longest winning streak in UFC middleweight history, Whittaker accepted the defeat with humility and clearly stated after the fight that he and Adesanya are now the best fighters in the middleweight division.
