The UFC middleweight champion is having a great day. He signed a new contract with the organization that makes him one of the highest paid fighters in UFC history, and on Sunday morning he proved he deserved the contract with a successful defense.
Not counting his welterweight bout with Jan Blachowicz, Israel Adesanya has not lost a single fight. Even the Polish fighter beat him on points, although he had an interesting weight advantage.
On Sunday, Adesanya defeated Robert Whittaker for the second time in his career. He knocked him out in their first fight back in 2019, and now he dominated the fight on points, and still very close. It was a beautiful “chess game”.
One of the main fights of the main card then catered for Jared Cannonier and Derek Brunson, a middleweight three and four. The former dominated the bout and showed a great turn of phrase.
Cannonier was sent down after a hard punch in the first round, but was saved from a choke by the end of the first round. In the second, however, he knocked out his opponent. After the win, he asked for a title fight, asking for it from UFC boss Dana White himself.
And after his win, he pointed Adesanya right at Cannonier. In the past, he has referred to him as a middleweight dark horse, even calling him the most dangerous fighter immediately after.
Cannonier has won five of his last six fights, ending four of them by knocking out his opponent.
