Both Inter and AC Milan have reached the last four of the Champions League after almost 15 years, and the draw has additionally favoured the fans. The two rivals were drawn to play two games together.
The first of these two matches took place this Wednesday, hosted, of course, by the famous San Siro. The iconic shrine will open its gates to spectators for the return leg.
It is a great rarity that both semi-final matches will be played in the same stadium.
In the first clash, the Rossoneri were listed as the home team and thus had more tickets available for their fans. The atmosphere was boisterous, after all Italian fans are used to an electric atmosphere.
Moreover, the duel on 11 May set a historic record. The San Siro stadium was hopelessly sold out and in terms of ticket sales, it was the most profitable match in the history of Italian football.
According to the Italian newspaper La Gazetta dello Sport, the ticket sales amounted to an astronomical €10,461,000! It was a real football feast.
The number of celebrities who did not miss the clash is a testament to this. You could see Novak Djokovic in the box of honour next to Andriy Shevchenko, his tennis partner Matteo Berrettini or F1 driver Pierre Gasly.
But that record is unlikely to last long. The rematch, which will be officially hosted by the Nerazzurri, is expected to raise up to 12 million euros.
Moreover, it is Inter who are closer to the gates of the Istanbul final after beating AC 2-0. The hosts were virtually harmless up front without Portugal’s Rafael Leão and it is questionable whether the winger will be fit for the rematch.
