AC Milan defeat Cagliari 4-1 in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals to reach the quarter-finals. Several players who are not used much in the league have been added to the starting line-up. Luka Jovic took the chance to impress, scoring two goals.
Jovic made the difference in the first half
Cagliari entered the match very actively. After five minutes, his players demanded a penalty after contact in the penalty area, but VAR ruled the situation as a clean tackle. This put Milan on the horse and they started to dictate the pace of the game.
Shortly before half an hour of play, Luka Jovic received a pass in the whitewash and aimed accurately. The goalkeeper had no chance to intervene and the Rossoneri went into the lead. Before the end of the first half, the lead increased. A great pass from Theo Hernandez found Jovic, who scored his second of the game to end the half.
If Cagliari had hoped to pick themselves up in the second half, Chaka Traore dashed all hopes. In the 50th minute, he scored with a hard shot to make it 3:0. Rafael Leao could have added the final stamp at the end of the match, but his unassuming shot went just wide of the post.
An honourable success for Cagliari after all. Paulo Azzi headed the ball into the middle and was not afraid to shoot from a respectable distance. His shot sailed into the bottom left corner and the reduction came. However, the home side had the last word when Rafael Leao made the final 4-1 in stoppage time.
AC Milan advance to the quarter-finals
AC Milan crushed Cagliari to reach the quarter-finals with a 4-1 win. The Rossoneri decided to save a few of their mainstays for this match. However, even that was enough for them to advance to the top eight.
Cagliari beat two opponents on their way, but the Milan giant was more than they could handle. On the other hand, for the home side, it was their first Coppa Italia appearance of the year. Their next opponent will be Atalanta vs Sassuolo.
