Absolute madness in Valencia! See how the fans celebrated the promotion to the Cup Final
Valencia is one of the teams with the best fans in Spain. At the start of this century, it was still one of the top teams in La Liga and a feared team, but then it fell very low due to the absolute incompetence of the management. That’s why Wednesday’s progression to the Copa del Rey final meant a lot to the fans.
Spanish champion in 2002 and 2004, Copa del Rey winner in 1999, 2008 and Spanish Super Cup winner in 1999. On top of that, the 2004 UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup winner, as well as the 2004 UEFA Super Cup. Valencia at the turn of the 21st century was one of Spain’s absolute top teams.
It was only with great trepidation that you went to the Estadio Mestalla, it was often said that you were already 0:1 down when you entered the city. That’s how much you get swept up in the atmosphere that Bats fans can create. But in 2014, Peter Lim took over the club and the glorious club began to fade away.
His incomprehensible actions have turned all the fans against him, wishing for his immediate departure. The high point was in 2019 when he sacked the successful coach Marcelino, who had won the Copa del Rey with Valencia just three months before. Moreover, at the end of the season, he got rid of captain and complete club icon Dani Pareja, sending him to rivals Villarreal for a ridiculous €7m.
Despite all the turbulence, the fans remain loyal to Valencia and the players are trying to give back. They first drew 1-1 at Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey semi-final and the fans were determined to push their favourites to the final at any cost in the home rematch.
Already two hours before the game, masses of fans were ready outside the Estadio Mestalla and this is how they greeted the bus with the players.
The match was decided by a single goal from Goncalo Guedes, but not just any goal. After a deflected centre, he worked his way through and beat Agirrezabal with a beautiful shot.
Valencia had already secured promotion, which made the fans happy for the first time in years. They will face either Betis or Rayo Vallecano in the final in Seville.
After the game, Valencia fans didn’t want to go home and once again sniggered outside the Mestalla, where they celebrated with the players to reach the final.
