Absentees for Wimbledon are not over, Halep and Thiem are also out
Wimbledon 2021 will not start with a full line-up. Nadal, Osaka, Goffin and Raonic will not play in the tournament. It doesn’t end there, however, as Simona Halep and Dominik Thiem won’t start either due to injury.
Wimbledon 2021 will not start with a full line-up. Nadal, Osaka, Goffin and Raonic will not play in the tournament. It doesn’t end there, however, as Simona Halep and Dominik Thiem won’t start either due to injury. Thus, the women’s part of Wimbledon will be without the defending champion. What injury forced both players to miss Wimbledon?
Halep picked up her injury at the Rome tournament in May, where she badly injured her calf in a match against Kerber.
In great agony, she had to abandon the match and her participation at Rolland Garros was in jeopardy. The Romanian subsequently underwent surgery and then did everything she could to return to the courts as soon as possible.
However, the treatment didn’t go quite as planned and she had to miss Rolland Garros. Moreover, Halep is not 100% well even now and had to call off her participation in Wimbledon.
This is a big line over the budget for Halep, as the Romanian tennis player won the entire Wimbledon in 2019. So this year she cannot defend that result and will lose 2000 points, which will knock her out of the top 10 in the rankings.
Even the absence of Thiem is quite unfortunate. All the more so since his injury was just a few days ago. He didn’t finish his match against Mannarino in Mallorca and had to abandon the match.
The reason was pain in his right wrist. Medical tests showed that his fears were justified. This injury will sideline Thiem for several weeks and he will miss the Olympics.
His comeback should take place at the US Open, where he defends his only Grand Slam title. This year has been a season of terror for Thiem. After the US Open title, mental problems have been weighing on him and it has shown in his performances.
The turnaround didn’t even come at his favourite Rolland Garros, where he finished in the first round. Then came the injury and another blow to his psyche. It’s a big test of resilience for the Austrian and we’ll see how he can deal with it.
