The 18-year-old Brazilian footballer was at the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine a year ago and now he may be about to make his debut for Real Madrid.
Exactly one year ago, Tobias turned 17 and has just joined Shakhtar Donetsk as a new signing. But that’s when talk of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine began, leaving the young Brazilian glued to the news of what was actually happening around him.
A few weeks later, the war really started and Russia began bombing Kiev. Exactly on the night of 23 February to 24 February, Tobias celebrated his 18th birthday and also his coming of age. But instead of celebrating, he had to go into a bunker to hide from the Russian attack.
A few days later, Tobias managed to escape from Ukraine and returned to his country. Not for long, however, as he was high on Real Madrid’s list and on April 1, his guest appearance at one of the biggest clubs in the world became official.
the 18-year-old right-back started playing for Castilla, which is Real Madrid’s B-team and he convinced everyone with his performances that he has the potential for such a club. For legendary player and now coach Raúl González, Tobias is an indispensable part of the line-up and Real Madrid already know that he will exercise his €10 million option.
At the moment, however, a big chance may be coming. Carlo Ancelotti has his first two right-backs injured, with Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vázquez out. Although the situation can be patched up by Nacho or Militae, the public, media and fans are begging Ancelotti to give Tobias a chance.
And that might actually happen. For tonight’s Copa del Rey match played on Villarreal’s soil, Tobias has been included in the nomination and maybe, one year after hiding in a bunker, he will play for football’s most successful club ever.
Fans have been pushing Ancelotti a lot to give Tobias space, as it is the right-back position that the club is pushing the boot into. Carvajal often struggles with injuries and also with fluctuations in form, while Lucas Vázquez is again a converted midfielder and is not good at defending. Plus, both are now over 30 years old.
Thus, the promising youngster can expand the Brazilian enclave at Real Madrid and ask the royal club not to buy any right-back in the summer. He already has one replacement.
