The UFC is currently in an awkward situation. For the second welterweight champion in a row has been injured and vacated his title. First it was Jiri Prochazka, now it’s Jamahal Hill, who has had his mouth pretty much cut open so far. Is he learning humility? From the comments made about the Moravian samurai, it sounds like it.

It’s as if the welterweight division is cursed after the departure of Jon Jones. The under 93kg division has seen five champions since the long-time king moved up to heavyweight, none of whom have been able to defend their title.

The last two champions didn’t even get to defend their belts, with one battle for the belt ending in a draw. The first champion who failed to defend his title was Jiri Prochazka, who seriously injured his shoulder before his rematch with Glover Teixeira and surrendered his title.

Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev subsequently clashed in the aforementioned draw, and about a month after that Jamahal Hill became the new king of the division, cutting down Teixeira.

Hill made some pretty big statements afterwards, lashing out at Prochazka, putting pressure on him. He even talked about how he didn’t understand how he could give up the title since there was more money involved, among other things.

Their fight was supposed to happen this year, basically just waiting for an official announcement. We just won’t see it. Hill got injured and despite his words earlier, he gave up the title himself.

“Man, I’m really sorry. I was really looking forward to our fight. I appreciate you giving up the title. Only a person who has experienced something like that can appreciate such a thing,” Procházka said about the American fighter.

The Moravian samurai then added the question of who his next opponent would be. ” I am the champion.”

And what did Hill say? On social media he reacted rather surprisingly and humbly: “Thank you, champion. Our dance will happen one day, that’s for sure. In the meantime, take care of the division. Can’t wait to get in the cage against each other.”
