Karolína Muchová is back. The 25-year-old tennis player made a great comeback. She defeated her compatriot Martinsova at the tournament in Miami and after winning 7::6, 7::6 she celebrated her progress to the second round. Her next opponent will be Canadian Fernandez.
Karolína Muchová’s long absence
Six months. That’s how long Karolína Muchová’s enforced break lasted. The Moravian tennis player had problems with an injured abdominal muscle all the previous season, because of which she played only a minimum of matches.
Due to her long-term absence, she has dropped considerably in the rankings and is currently ranked 71st. She could try to return to the top of the world at the tournament in Miami, in the first round she had a duel against Tereza Martincova.
The more experienced Muchova entered the match better. She got the first break of the match and took the lead 3: 1. Martincova, however, managed to erase the deficit quickly and the match was tied at 3:3.
After that, both tennis players held their serve until the very end, the winner of the first set was decided by a shortened game. Muchová won it 7::3, the native of Olomouc was closer to advancing to the next stage of the tournament.
The opening of the next set was also much better for Muchová. The native of Olomouc quickly led 4::1, it seemed that her advancement was a mere formality. However, she lost her serve again at 4:2, so the drama in the second set was set.
Muchová moves on after a fight
Martincova’s rebound didn’t last too long, however, as Muchová was again the better player in the end of the set. The 25-year-old Moravian won the final tiebreak in this set as well (again 7:3). The semifinalist from the Australian Open 2021 won 7:6, 7:6 and made a successful comeback on the WTA circuit. In the second round, she will face Fernandez of Canada.
A great success for 16-year-old hope Frühvirt
The promising Linda Frühvirt also made her first start at the WTA tournament, receiving a wild card from the organizers. The talented Czech gave an excellent performance against Kovinic, beating her opponent 6: 0, 6: 4 and notching up the biggest win of her career. In the second round she will face another strong opponent, this time against Mertens.
In addition to the aforementioned, 5 more of our tennis players will appear in the tournament and all of them will appear in the second round. Siniakova and Bouzkova managed to win their opening matches and move on. Kvitova, Pliskova and Vondrousova have the advantage of a free draw and will enter the title fight later. The only absentee is Barbora Krejcikova, who is nursing an injured shoulder.
