A walk on the main card with champion Oliveira? UFC 274 will apparently offer two title fights
A few days ago, it was confirmed that welterweight champion Glover Teixeira and Jiri Prochazka will fight for the welterweight title at UFC 274 on May 7, 2022. But as noted journalist Brett Okamoto of ESPN, the UFC’s main media partner, stated on his Twitter account last week, there will likely be another title fight at the same gala.
Dana White himself has let it be known on the TMZSports YouTube channel that Conor McGregor could return from a serious injury from his fight with Dustin Poirier as early as this summer, and of course there has been loud talk about the possibility of the star Irishman returning immediately for a title fight.
In particular, Justin Gaethje, who won fight of the year in November against Michael Chandler, was felt to be a prime candidate to fight lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for the title.
But it is not just the champion who has long played on the nerves of his chief challenger, saying recently, for example, that only a fool would turn down Conor McGregor.
“Everything would lie in ashes there,” Gaethje threatened a month ago when asked by TMZSports how he would react if Conor overtook him in a title fight.
Even though Gaethje is the number one lightweight, we’ve seen more than once in the past that the rankings don’t always matter in the UFC. Even more so when it comes to Conor McGregor.
But now it looks like Gaethje will finally get his next title shot after failing to keep up with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254 in October 2020 when he got choked out in the second round.
And what does he have to say about division champion Charles Oliveira? “He’s really improved a lot over the last few years, he’s a very confident fighter and I’m really looking forward to the challenge”, Gaethje told BT Sports. We’ll see how the situation develops in the coming days, I’m sure.
