Oscar Piastri joined McLaren before this season, replacing his compatriot Daniel Ricciardo. And since the start of the 2023 season, he has been performing very well indeed for a rookie. McLaren has secured the services of its driver by extending his contract until 2026.
In Saudi Arabia, with a slow and almost dysfunctional McLaren car, he made it to Q3, the final part of qualifying. However, Oscar Piastri did not score his first points until the third race of the season, when he picked up four points in Australia for a final eighth place.
He scored another point for tenth place in Monaco, but McLaren was not a competitive team in the first few races of the season. However, the Woking team brought in a massive package of upgrades during the season that worked absolutely phenomenally.
Today, McLaren is back in podium contention and could even be the second fastest team in the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix. But back to Piastri. The 22-year-old Australian recorded his best result in Great Britain this year.
He finished fourth at Silverstone and added a respectable twelve points to his tally. He has collected 42 points in fifteen Grands Prix so far and is eleventh in the drivers’ championship standings.
No wonder McLaren wanted to secure Piastri’s services for years to come. Although Piastri was already under contract for next year, the Woking team is aware of its position and has extended Piastri’s contract until 2026.
An incredible talent!
“I’m delighted that our partnership with Oscar will continue until the end of 2026. He’s an incredible talent and asset to the team, so it’s fantastic that we’re making a long-term commitment to each other,” McLaren CEO Zak Brown told the team’s official website.
“Oscar is already proving what he can do on track and has been a major contributor to the turnaround we’ve seen this season. He’s fit in really well with the team and the whole McLaren Racing family really appreciates him. I look forward to seeing how he continues to develop on and off the track,” he added.
“I am thrilled to be extending my partnership with McLaren for many more years. I want to fight at the front of the grid with this team and I’m excited about the vision and the foundations that have already been laid to get us there,” Piastri added of his boss’ words.
