Former world number one Karolina Pliskova will be one of the biggest candidates for the overall title at the upcoming US Open, which starts on Monday. Only three players from the top 10 (Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and Sofia Kenin) will play on the American concrete.
The rest of the elite company, such as Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina and Kiki Bertens, preferred to stay home due to fears of a coronavirus pandemic.
This year’s US Open will thus be one of Karolina Pliskova’s best chances to win a much-coveted grand slam.
The question remains, however, in what shape the owner of sixteen titles on the WTA circuit will be in. After an enforced break, she unexpectedly succumbed to Russia’s Kudermetova in her first tough match. However, most of the favourites did not perform well in the US Open rehearsal.
The current third player in the WTA rankings went the furthest at the US Open in 2016, when she fell to Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the final. Last year, she already finished in the eighth round at the racquet of Johanna Konta.
Petra Kvitová, Karolina Muchová, Katerina Siniakova, Marie Bouzkova and Markéta Vondrousová will also be on the courts at Flushing Meadows. The Czech fans will definitely have something to look forward to.
