After Robert Lewandowski’s transfer to Barcelona, another transfer bombshell may be on the way! According to the Spanish daily AS, the star Cristiano Ronaldo could return to Spain.
Will Ronaldo return to Spain?
There has been speculation all summer about his future, but nothing is still official. Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly wants to leave Manchester United, eager to improve his record in the Champions League, where the Red Devils will miss out.
But coach Erik ten Hag still claims that Ronaldo is not for sale and figures in his plans for the upcoming season. Besides, he added that he knows nothing about the Portuguese making a transfer request.
However, Ronaldo has not started training with the team, nor has he gone on a pre-season tour, giving room for various speculations. He excused the absence with family reasons. However, according to foreign media, he is considering a transfer.
The most talked about escape to Chelsea, but the latter had already ended its efforts. From Bayern or PSG, Ronaldo should have heard a clear “no”. So the talk began that he might return to Portugal, specifically to Sporting, where he started his career. However, he denied this information on social media.
On Monday, however, Spanish daily AS reported that the Portuguese could return to Spain. But not to Real Madrid. However, he could still find a place in the Spanish capital.
According to the AS journalists, Ronaldo’s representatives had contacted Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone and allegedly tried to convince him to bring Ronaldo to his team.
Does that make sense?
It would, of course, be a sensational move. And not just for Atlético Madrid, but for the whole of La Liga, which would be given an extra boost. Already, fans can look forward to Karim Benzema’s duels with Robert Lewandowski. Then, if Ronaldo were to come to Atlético, it would be spicy.
Especially considering that Ronaldo has gone down in Real Madrid history as arguably the greatest player of all time.
Moreover, Atlético would welcome a similar goalscorer. Griezmann still hasn’t found the form he left Barcelona with. Luis Suárez has left the club and to build an attack on Morata? That doesn’t make much sense in terms of the club’s ambitions.
Moreover, Simeone knows Ronaldo’s qualities very well, as the Portuguese scored goal after goal against his side. He even made it through two Champions League finals against Atlético, albeit once in a penalty shootout. And it is the prospect of winning this trophy that could prompt Simeone to sign him.
