A tough choice for Barcelona. One reinforcement cannot sign up for the Europa League
Despite major financial problems, Barcelona had a relatively successful transfer period. Four new players have arrived at the Camp Nou, but only three can be added to the Europa League roster.
Despite major financial problems, Barcelona had a relatively successful transfer period. Four new players have arrived at the Camp Nou, but only three can be added to the Europa League roster.
Already during the autumn, the legendary Dani Alves returned to Catalonia, the 38-year-old back was supposed to lift the struggling Blaugranas defence.
Then, in the winter, management brought in Ferran Torres from Manchester City for €65 million. It was a problem to register both players for the La Liga roster, given the packed salary cap, but in the end it worked out.
That’s why Barcelona brought in two more reinforcements to an almost innocuous attack. Adama Traoré arrived on loan from Wolverhampton, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived from Arsenal.
That’s good news for Xavi, but he also has to deal with an inconvenience. For the knockout phase of the Europa League, the Blaugranas can only register three of these four reinforcements.
If Dani Alves doesn’t fit, it will be a problem for the defence, where the Brazilian veteran has already become quite settled. On the other hand, missing out on one of the three attacking stars would be a blow to their egos.
So Xavi is definitely not facing an easy decision. Barcelona will face Napoli in the Europa League playoffs, this is probably the toughest possible opponent the Catalans could get. So the former midfielder must hope he picks his three chosen ones correctly.
