Historically the most successful Real Madrid player with the most trophies to his credit, a beloved legend that no one will ever forget. This is Marcelo, the Brazilian left back who brought joy to Los Blancos fans for 15 years. But now his journey at the Santiago Bernabéu is coming to an end.
Marcelo came to Real Madrid in 2007 with an extremely difficult task. As a teenager, he was supposed to replace outgoing legend Roberto Carlos, but he replaced his compatriot perfectly, even surpassing him.
But all good things come to an end. Everyone’s favourite and ever-smiling left-back started to decline a lot in performance and lost his place in the line-up in the 2018/19 season after the departure of his best friend Cristiano Ronaldo. He gradually became a substitute and rather non-playing captain this season.
Even so, he was highly respected by the club as he had a great influence on the squad and passed on his valuable experience to the younger players. He never complained about the lack of playing time and on the contrary he was a true leader in the cabin. But now it was time for him to make way for younger and hungrier players.
So he didn’t agree with the management to extend his contract, even though he wanted to stay at his beloved club for at least one more year. Thus, after winning the Champions League, he announced that this was his last day as a Real Madrid player.
Already during the celebrations in Cibeles Square, Marcel had tears in his eyes as he knew it was his last time, but he still held on. But after the move to the Santiago Bernabéu, he couldn’t do it anymore.
All the players were called onto the pitch in turn, with the legendary Brazilian as captain coming last with the trophy. While the other players cut dances, kissed the emblem or waved to the fans in celebration, the weight of the situation and the sad farewell fell on Marcelo.
When he walked into the stadium with the trophy and heard the huge ovation from the fans, he knelt down, bowed to the fans and tears began to flow.
When he reached the rest of the team on the podium in tears, the players felt his sadness and immediately gave him a team hug.
When he was later given the floor, the entire stadium, along with his teammates, began to bow down and shout “Marceeelo!”
“I’m closing one cycle here at the best club in the world, ” Marcelo began, whereupon the fans shouted for him to stay at Real Madrid. “But today is not a sad day, today is a day of joy because we have won the best competition in the world again! ” the captain continued.
“I am very proud of myself, my family too, thank you very much for the magical night at the Bernabéu. And one last thing: The future of Real Madrid is in great hands with these young men. Thank you and Hala Madrid!” Marcelo said goodbye to the audience.
