It was indeed a great day, and a great day for many of the players in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. First of all, we have a new World Champion!
The fact that Fabio Quartararo dominated the MotoGP championship means that Yamaha has its rider champion again after six years. The last time Jorge Lorenzo won the championship in Yamaha colours.
But this is a very significant achievement for France. Never in the history of MotoGP has a French rider won a world championship.
Honda Repsol also scored a significant success in this race, celebrating a double after four long years! Marc Márquez won the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, with Pol Espargaro finishing second.
Honda’s last double was in 2017, at Aragon. Márquez took the win then, with Dani Pedrosa finishing second.
Of course, it wouldn’t have happened if race leader Francesco Bagnaia hadn’t crashed with 4 laps to go. This crash also meant that Quartararo was able to enjoy the title by a significant points lead.
Bagnaia made almost the same mistake as his teammate on lap 5 of the race. Jack Miller crashed hard in turn 15.
However, in addition to the Ducati riders, six other riders did not see the finish line. For technical reasons, Alex Márquez and Miguel Oliveira were unable to finish the race. On the eleventh circuit we saw another crash, which was caused by Iker Lecuona.
And two laps later, Jorge Martin also crashed and was unable to get up for a while. However, according to the latest information, he should be fine.
But it doesn’t end there, a very dangerous moment was the incident between Joan Mir and Danilo Petrucci. The contact took place in turn 2, already on the third lap of the race.
Fifteen riders reached the finish line, the overall standings are as follows: 1. Márquez, 2. Pol Espargaro, 3. Bastianini, 4. Quartararo, 5. Zarco, 6. Rins, 7. Aleix Espargaro, 8. Viñales, 9. Marini, 10. Rossi, 11. Binder, 12. Pirro, 13. Dovizioso, 14. Morbidelli and 15. Nakagami.
Valentino Rossi, for whom this season will be his last, said a touching farewell to his Italian fans. It is no exaggeration to say that his departure will mark the end of a great era of Moto GP.
