Formula 1 has its twelfth race of the season, the French Grand Prix, on the schedule today, Sunday 24 July. And it brought an absolutely shocking crash on lap 18, when Charles Leclerc crashed from first place!

After Saturday’s qualifying, it looked like a great chance to win and extend Ferrari’s winning streak. In fact, Monaco’s Leclerc qualified on pole position thanks to his fastest time and managed to stay ahead of second-placed Max Verstappen even after the start.

But then came lap 18 of the French Grand Prix and Leclerc ended up in the tyre barrier on the exit of Turn 1.

Of course, yellow flags were immediately waved on the circuit, with race HQ calling the safety car to the track. According to the latest information, however, technical problems with the accelerator pedal were again to blame for his accident.

And it was the safety car that was used by a number of drivers to make pit stops for tyre changes.

On lap 21, the safety car was back in the pits and the race could be resumed at the Paul Ricard circuit. Verstappen in the Red Bull currently leads the French Grand Prix, ahead of Lewis Hamilton in second and Sergio Pérez in third.

Fourth place is currently occupied by George Russell, giving Mercedes two cars to fight for the podium.
