Tom Aspinall is one of the top heavyweights, but suffered a nasty defeat a year ago when he injured his knee in a duel with Curtis Blaydes. Almost to the day exactly one year later he returned to the cage and made a grand claim of getting closer to a title shot.
It was July 23, 2022. Tom Aspinall as a rising heavyweight star would challenge Curtis Blaydes in London in front of a home crowd. The fight was over in 15 seconds. Before anything could happen, the Englishman hurt his knee.
It took him a long time to recover from the serious injury. He tore the collateral ligament in his knee and damaged both the meniscus and the anterior cruciate ligament. It was to be expected what form he would return in. And almost to the day, we found out.
22. for on July 2023, the Salford native returned to the cage and challenged his friend and top ten heavyweight Marcin Tybura. He went into the fight as a featherweight himself. He didn’t wait for anything. He immediately started hitting the Polish fighter.
After one minute and 13 seconds, it was over. Tybura crumpled to the ground, where the English big man only needed to add a few more punches to make his comeback victorious. After the fight Aspinall asked for a round of applause for his opponent and praised him as a fighter and a person.
Speed, momentum, hard kicks, hard punches. Aspinall really showed a lot in such a short time in the match. The fans at London’s O2 Arena had reason to be satisfied. Their favourite also revealed his next target.
Cyril Gane will face Sergio Spivac in Paris in September. Aspinall intends to be at the scene, he wants to watch the fight from the front row and eventually beat the winner of this duel. “Then I’ll beat Jon Jones,” he said confidently in the cage.
Jones is one of the best fighters in history, a fight with him will be a big challenge and a big draw for anyone. However, the legend of the MMA scene has a duel with Stipe Miocic ahead of him and the question is whether he will still want to fight anyone after that.
