A slut: If we don’t qualify for the EURO, we’re total idiots. My position at West Ham is great
Vladimír Coufal joined the Czech team despite his injury and will probably be ready for Friday’s qualifying match against Poland. How does he see the Czech Republic’s situation in the group and his position at West Ham?
Vladimír Coufal joined the Czech team despite his injury and will probably be ready for Friday’s qualifying match against Poland. How does he see the Czech Republic’s situation in the group and his position at West Ham?
Although he missed the last 5 West Ham games, he still came to the national team meeting. Vladimír Coufal was sidelined by a heel injury, but the right-back was doing everything he could to get himself together for Friday’s game against Poland.
The match against our neighbour will kick off the Czechs’ qualification for the 2024 European Championship, which will be played in Germany. The top two teams will advance directly from the group, and the Czechs are the clear favourites to face Moldova, Albania and the Faroe Islands in addition to Poland.
And Coufal has the same opinion. “If we don’t qualify, we’re complete morons. It may sound funny, but we all perceive our position,” the defender said in an interview with Sport. “The football world is levelling out and we are not going to have easy games. We have to show quality, deal with everything and advance,” Coufal added.
The situation at West Ham
West Ham are not enjoying a good season at all. While last year they were chasing teams at the top of the table and secured the Conference League, the Hammers are currently languishing in 18th place.
Coufal and co., however, do not admit that they could fall. The team continues to be very good and according to the 30-year-old, the Hammers just need to build up a three-game winning streak and they will be somewhere else.
As for his position, it has changed a lot since the fall. He lost his place in the starting line-up and even appeared on West Ham’s list of unwanted players, which included Coufal. What does he think his current position in the squad is?
“I think it’s great. Since the winter I started to play everything. I hope to be healthy after the national break and get back to where I left off,” assures Coufal.
“I don’t know where the list came from, nobody said anything like that to my face and I think coach David Moyes would have done it. He called me right after the World Cup and said that I was important to him, that it was a mistake that I didn’t play a few games,” he adds about the list.
