According to the latest information, star defender Raphaël Varane is about to end his national team career. However, the reasons are quite simple and it has something to do with something that everyone in the football environment was actually afraid of. A demanding playing schedule.
Varane made his debut for the France senior national team in the victory over Georgia in March 2013 during a qualifying match for the 2014 World Cup. Thanks to his performances, he was quickly included in the starting line-up of Les Bleus, although due to a thigh injury he was unable to participate in Euro 2016.
Two years later, however, he was an absolutely indispensable part of the national team at the World Cup, playing every minute and scoring the opening goal in the quarter-final match against Uruguay.
Notably, Varane became only the fourth player in history to win both the World Cup and the Champions League in the same year. Before him, Christian Karembu (1998), Roberto Carlos (2002) and Sami Khedira did it in 2014.
The 29-year-old Lille native was also an integral part of the France team when they won the Nations League in 2021.
And most recently, he was a big mainstay of the French national team at the World Cup in Qatar. It should be added, Varane has played a total of 93 games for the senior French national team and has scored 5 goals in them.
He has participated in three World Championships, one European Championship and the aforementioned Nations League. And now, according to Goal and Daily Mail, Varane will announce the end of his national team career.
Le Parisien also writes about it. Varane would follow his compatriot Hugo Lloris. The Manchester United stopper then pointed out that the very demanding playing schedule, which many feared, had begun to take its toll.
Last but not least, he also wants to spend more time with his family. Moreover, this is quite understandable. Varane also has to think about his club career. In the current season, he has not been without injuries to his foot or ankle itself.
