The very first weekend in June will deliver us the UFC 302 gala. In the main event, the champion Islam Makhachev and the legendary Dustin Poirier will face each other. The American boasts a great career, great popularity, but it has one flaw.
Diamond, as he is nicknamed, has never won a legitimate title. He was only an interim champion, however, losing title fights to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira. He didn’t even make it to the BMF title fight when he was sensationally knocked out by Justin Gaethje.
Poirier is undoubtedly one of the best fighters to never win a title. However, that may change. In just a few days, the 35-year-old star will have another chance. But probably his last. Dustin has hinted at the possible end of his career.
Will Dustin Poirier end his career?
With a record of 30-8, 30 fights in the UFC with a record of 22-7, with one fight ending in a no decision. There is no doubt that Dustin Poirier will one day be in the UFC Hall of Fame. He’s had big fights, fought against the best, and never shied away from a challenge. On the contrary.
He’s definitely earned his title shot. “I’m capable of it. I can do anything. I can climb to the top and fight for the title,” he let be heard in an interview with CBS Sports. However, he hinted that the fire inside him is already slowly burning out.
“I just don’t have it in me anymore. I’m not going to climb up the rankings again. I’ve been doing it for a long time. MMA is a very selfish sport. I’m ready to be a father, a husband, have a routine life. This could be the last fight,” he revealed before the fight with Makhachev.
But he’s not sure: ” I’m still on the edge. Whether I win or lose. I just want to be happy with my career. I’m trying to be positive, to look on the bright side. I hope to finish the story and become a lightweight champion after my 31st fight in the UFC. What a story that would be…”
