In the 23rd round of the Premier League, two of the three teams from the relegation zone won. Watford dropped to second to last place, decided by a great strike from Norwich striker Josh Sargent.
Before the 23rd round, Watford were in the best position. It had fewer games played than both Norwich and Newcastle, while it could comfort itself with a one and two-point lead respectively.
However, Friday’s opening game was not a good one. In a direct battle for seventeenth place, he played Norwich goalless after half-time, but in the 51st minute, American striker Josh Sargent gave the Canaries the lead with an unreal goal.
It was the first Premier League strike for the young striker and he added an insurance goal fourteen minutes later, with the visitors’ third coming after an unfortunate deflection off Slovakian Juraj Kucka.
The third goal is also important because Watford will be relegated in the event of a goalless draw after the last round. The first game between the two ended 3-1 to the Hornets.
Another blow for Claudio Ranieri’s charges came on Saturday. The penultimate Newcastle, who lost their win at the very end of the week, visited Leeds. Leeds were the perfect opponent to make amends, and indeed it worked.
As expected, the home side dominated the ball, but were almost harmless in the final stages. Jonjo Shlevey shot dangerously in the first half, Ilian Meslier made a superb save. The bald midfielder’s big moment did come after all.
In the 75th minute, Javier Manquillo was fouled just outside the box. It was Shelvey who set up the ball and, thanks to Meslier’s hesitation, he scored with a cross to make it 1-0. The Magpies jumped to eighteenth place, one point behind Norwich.
