A return to Bayern? No way! Nagelsmann remains coach of the German national team. I made my decision with my heart, he says
Julian Nagelsmann remains on the bench of the German national team. He has signed a contract with the German Football Association (DFB) until 2026, thus ending the possibility of a return to club football, Nagelsmann’s decision also puts an end to speculation about negotiations with Bayern.
Julian Nagelsmann remains on the bench of the German national team. He has signed a contract with the German Football Association (DFB) until 2026, thus ending the possibility of a return to club football, Nagelsmann’s decision also puts an end to speculation about negotiations with Bayern.
Thirty-six-year-old Nagelsmann took over the German national team from Hans Flick in September 2023 on a short-term contract. In any case, it was still to cover the domestic European Championships, which will take place this year.
However, it is now clear that Nagelsmann will remain with the German national team, or the four-time world champions, until 2026. He has agreed a contract with the German Football Association until 2026.
“I made my decision with my heart. Coaching the national team is a great honour, as is the opportunity to work with the best footballers in the country. If successful, we can make the whole country go crazy,” Nagelsmann said after signing the contract.
“We needed those two wins and they could be a harbinger of what could come. I really liked the enthusiasm of the fans. Together we want to reach the European Championships, we want it very much. And after the championship I will look forward to the challenge of the World Cup, which I have accepted together with my team,” added the German coach.
Nagelsmann’s record at the helm of the German team so far is three wins, one draw and two defeats from six friendlies.
The former Hoffenheim, Leipzig and Bayern coach still has two more preliminary matches against Ukraine and Greece in June before the Euro hosts open Euro 2024 against Scotland in Munich on 14 June. Their next group matches are against Hungary and Switzerland.
Nagelsmann will not return to club football
This, of course, puts an end to the possibility of a return to club football. Nagelsmann has been linked with taking over as head coach at Bayern. The Munich giant is looking for a new coach and Thomas Tuchel will leave the Allianz Arena after this season.
Speculation that Nagelsmann is in talks with Bayern over a three to four-year contract is therefore now irrelevant. However, the current second Bundesliga side have other names on their list – Roberto De Zerbi and Unai Emery.
