Liverpool won their opening match of the Champions League group stage, beating AC Milan 3-2 at home. It was almost the same result that ended the legendary Champions League final sixteen years ago (3:3).

Divock Origi had the first chance of the match in the third minute, but missed the ball perfectly. The active home team continued to threaten, two minutes later, thanks to a run by a defender, Diogo Jota’s shot was only a throw-in.

In the ninth minute, the score changed. Trent Alexander Arnold made it to the penalty area and shot past the visitors’ goalkeeper. Five minutes later, another complication for Milan, after a hand in the penalty area, the referee awarded a penalty kick.

Goalkeeper Mike Maignan kept his team in the game for the points, deflecting Mohamed Salah’s shot and dealing with the finish. The French goalkeeper also shone in the 30th minute when he again saved a shot from Salah.

Liverpool fizzled out at the end of the first half and let AC catch their breath. Ante Rebic first equalised in the 42nd minute to make it 1-1, then two minutes later Brahim Diaz turned the tide completely. The score was 1:2.
