A problem for the next champion? Returning points to Juventus could put the Czech team at a significant disadvantage in European cups
After a recent scandal involving Juventus, including its current and former officials, the Italian team succeeded in part with its appeal and was reinstated with 15 points deducted. In this case, however, it may be a big complication for the Czech champion in terms of its performance in the European Cup. Why?
After a recent scandal involving Juventus, including its current and former officials, the Italian team succeeded in part with its appeal and was reinstated with 15 points deducted. In this case, however, it may be a big complication for the Czech champion in terms of its performance in the European Cup. Why?
The most successful Italian club of recent seasons has been punished in the past with a deduction of 15 points, while several officials have been banned from football.
The reason was that the club’s management illegally took commissions from transfers and reported false profits to investors between 2018 and 2020. The club appealed to the Italian Olympic Committee’s highest sports court and succeeded on Thursday 20 April.
The court partially upheld the appeal. We have covered the situation in more detail in a previous article, but in any case, Juventus are back on top of the Serie A table thanks to the return of those 15 points. If only temporarily, perhaps.
With 59 points, they are currently third, two points behind second-placed Lazio. AS Roma dropped to fourth place with 56 points, followed by AC Milan with 53 points and Inter with 51 points.
And this is where the potential problem for the next Czech champion comes in. Both Milanese big clubs are currently outside the ranks securing qualification for the Champions League in the 2023/24 season.
A potential problem for the next Czech champion
But at the same time, both clubs have advanced to the Champions League semi-finals, where they will face off together in a double-header to reach the final. And if one of them manages to win the most prestigious club competition in the world, it will be a big complication for the next Czech champion.
Why? As you can already see in the above attached Twitter post, if the Italian club actually won the Champions League and also finished fifth or sixth in the domestic competition, the Czech champion would have to go to the second preliminary round.
What’s more, he wouldn’t even have the certainty of a Europa League group stage. The team that advances from the AC vs. Inter pairing will challenge the more successful team from the Manchester City-Real Madrid pairing in the Champions League final.
