France scored a 1: 0 victory against Austria, but the match had a big negative side. Striker Kylian Mbappé suffered an injury in the match and scans confirmed the fears. The Frenchman has a broken nose and is likely to finish the group stage.
France’s opening match at the 2024 European Championship in Germany is over. It was the favourite against Austria but failed to score. Nevertheless, they won, the reason being an own goal by Maximilian Wöber.
Three points are valuable, but the match has its negatives. The biggest one is the injury to Kylian Mbappé, who entered the match with the captain’s armband. Four minutes before the end, he crashed badly into his opponent’s shoulder in a tussle for the ball.
Soon his nose started to bleed and it was clear that he had to make a substitution. Mbappé was then treated and France needed to stop play and substitute, so he went to sit on the pitch without the referee’s permission and received a yellow card.
“The nose doesn’t look good at all. It’s a complication for us and a blemish on the evening,” coach Didier Deschamps said after the game. He also spoke of his team’s weakness.
“I don’t want to go into any hypotheses. The team is always stronger with Kylian, but if necessary we can play without him,” he added. Now Mbappé is under examination and the all clear.
As already reported, for example, by the British newspaper The Guardian, the Frenchman has a broken nose, surgery will fortunately not be necessary for him. A special mask will now be made for the player, with which he could perform later.
However, his start against the Netherlands is very unlikely and Mbappé will probably be available to his team only for the last game of the group stage. But we will definitely not see him without the mask.
