Just two days after the announcement of the final nomination for the Euro, where they will face the Czech Republic in the group stage, the England national team has to deal with its first major problem. In the preparatory match against Austria, fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold was injured and after a check-up on Thursday, he will definitely not take part in the tournament.

As soon as the final nomination was announced, the first problem appeared. Since the beginning of the preparation of the English team for the European championship, everything has not gone according to plan, because in the very first preparatory match, an important pillar of the team, Trent Alexander-Arnold, was injured.

The twenty-two-year-old Englishman contributed to the 1-0 win over Austria, which was secured by Bukayo Saka, playing the vast majority of the match, but after one of his defensive interventions at the very end of the match he staggered off the pitch and required treatment from the medical team.

In the Islands, the Liverpool player was immediately worried, and his loss just ten days before the opening match of Gareth Southgate’s selection (against Croatia on June 13) would mean a significant weakening for one of the biggest Euro favourites.

“Obviously it’s not a good sign at all that he had to leave the pitch in pain,” the England coach uttered after the game. “The championship is so close now that any slightest injury to any player causes considerable complication and uncertainty in his nomination. As far as Trent is concerned, the situation should become clearer in the next two days.”

And so it has. After Thursday’s scan, the unfortunate news was confirmed – the Liverpool full-back will be out for at least six weeks and therefore will not feature at the Euros.

Alexander-Arnold has crept into Albion’s twenty-six-man, extremely packed roster despite being one of the biggest question marks before its final narrowing on Tuesday.

But in the end, Gareth Southgate decided to take four right-backs – Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, Reece James and Alexander-Arnold – to the European Championships.

Now he will be allowed to pick a substitute, as the rules of the tournament allow him to replace a player in the nomination after the roster is closed in preparation of a serious injury. Players such as Lingard, Ward-Prowse, White and Watkins, players who were eliminated from the original wider squad on Tuesday, are all under consideration.
