A Premier League title match on a neutral ground? That could happen too

While this time last year Manchester City were slowly starting to run away from Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, this year with seven rounds to go only a point separates the first and third teams in the table. Should the Gunners limp again at the end, it could theoretically come down to a third league match between the Reds and the Citizens.

Arsenal currently have the title in their hands, thanks to goal difference, ahead of Liverpool, who are nine goals worse off.

The Gunners, on the other hand, have the toughest lot. Tottenham, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Chelsea still await them in the next Premier League schedule.

Third time against each other

If Arsenal really were to drop out at the end and Liverpool and Manchester City finish equal on points at the top of the league after 38 rounds, they could theoretically play each other for the third league game.

Both teams would have to have the same scoreline, as more goals scored after goal difference would decide the tie. The following is the balance of the games between them (twice 1:1), which is also related to the fourth point, which is the number of away goals.

Since both matches ended the same, the last criterion would be decided by the mutual match on neutral ground. The question is when this match would be played, as Manchester can very likely still play the FA Cup final after the last round, and then the preparation for the Euros starts.

For the Premier League title on the ground of the hated?

The match would not be played on either of the opponents’ home grounds, of course, as there is nothing to determine who should get this considerable advantage. Wembley is in play, of course, but that would be after the FA Cup final.

It offers a scenario that may already be terrifying Manchester United fans. Old Trafford is relatively close for both teams, the question is how a rival of Liverpool and Manchester City would view such an option. According to Sky Sports at least, it is a possible option anyway.
