Kateřina Siniaková would probably prefer to forget about the provisional course of 2021. But now in Parma, she has made a real surprise!
Kateřina Siniaková is having a very bad season indeed. Her first win came in mid-March in St. Petersburg, and she waited a month for another success when she reached the quarterfinals in Istanbul.
The quarterfinal of any tournament is a season’s high for the native of Hradec Kralove. On Tuesday, she could have equalled it, but few expected it.
On the court, she faced the world number eight Serena Williams, one of the best tennis players in history. For Siniakova, it was the first time she had ever faced the younger of the famous sisters.
It should be mentioned that Siniakova dropped to 68th in the WTA rankings. She shocked the tennis world by beating Williams in two sets!
The first set went to a tie-break, which Siniakova dominated 7::4 and won the first set 7::6. The first set was even, lasting one hour and three minutes.
The second set was much clearer. Siniakova won it 6::2 in just 35 minutes and took care of the unexpected.
Siniakova thus equaled her season’s best and advanced to the quarterfinals in Parma, where she will face the winner of the Garcia vs. Friedsam duel.
She became only the fourth tennis player from the Czech Republic who managed to beat Serena.
