A notch, a scandal? The referee robbed Real Madrid of a win in the last second of the game, then sent off his star for reacting. Watch the insane verdict
LaLiga is once again in the spotlight. There is a lot of critical talk about Spanish referees and now there is indeed a reason why. Because one of them has cut Real Madrid off in a very strange way. The Spanish league leader was looking for a great turnaround but had to let it go.
LaLiga is once again in the spotlight. There is a lot of critical talk about Spanish referees and now there is indeed a reason why. Because one of them has cut Real Madrid off in a very strange way. The Spanish league leader was looking for a great turnaround but had to let it go.
Although Real Madrid have a fairly decent lead over second-placed Girona and third-placed Barcelona, they still had a clear target at the Mestalla on Saturday. To win. However, it was expected to be a difficult game. Valencia, though once again among the average of LaLiga, are strong at home.
That was evident in the match. After half an hour of play, Los Blancos were already down 0:2 when Hugo Duro and Roman Yaremchuk scored for the home team. Before the end of the first half, Vinícius Júnior at least managed to reduce the deficit in injury time.
It was obvious what to expect from the second half. Real Madrid were the better team in the first half. It was almost a given that they would create even more pressure in the second half. And that’s exactly what happened, but it wasn’t enough to win.
In the 76th minute, Vinícius equalised at 2-2, but that was the last goal of the game. At least it was official and recognized. Real Madrid were looking for a win, but due to a very controversial referee’s decision, it didn’t happen.
Real Madrid robbed of the win
In the second half, there was quite a long setup. The referees added seven minutes to normal time. Instead, however, an extra nine minutes were played. Real Madrid almost made great use of the extra time.
In the last seconds of the game, Brahim Diaz sent a centre into the sixth. While the ball was in the air and Jude Bellingham was looking for it in the penalty area, the referee blew his whistle. At more or less the same moment, the English phenom sent a headed meruna into the net and scored a goal to make it 3-2.
However, his goal was disallowed. The reason? It came too late. At least according to the referee. This has upset the Los Blancos players. Instead of celebrating the goal, Bellingham was busy taming his negative emotions. He wasn’t very good at it. He went to protest to the referee and saw a red card.
According to coach Carlo Ancelotti, his charge said nothing wrong. “He just said it was a clear goal. He didn’t attack the referee in any way. We’ll see what he writes in the match report. The players are understandably upset, we all need to calm down,” Goal quoted the Italian strategist as saying.
It is worth mentioning that referees in LaLiga have long been under criticism. There are often disputes and discussions whether they are on the side of Real Madrid or Barcelona. But the fact is that they err on all sides and their verdicts often leave a lot to be desired.
