Monday at the Grand Slam in New York traditionally belonged to the fourth round. In the men’s category, the two big favourites for the title go on, and in the women’s category, Petra Kvitova’s conqueror goes on. Along with her, Karolina Pliskova is among the last eight, making the Czech Republic the only country with two representatives in the quarterfinals.
The 4 matches played in Flushing Meadows offered one quite surprising result. South Africa’s Lloyd Harris took care of that one, knocking out American sharpshooter Reilly Opelka 3:1 in sets and can look forward to a duel with Alexander Zverev. He handled the onslaught of Jannik Sinner and won 3: 0.
The other two matches were played by the number one and six seeded players, Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Matteo Berrettini of Italy. Both probably had more to do with their opponents than they wanted.
While Jenson Brooksby of the United States flew at Djokovic and took the first set, Oscar Otte of Germany outplayed Berrettini in the second set. In the end, however, the favourites won both 3:1 to celebrate the progress and will face each other in a rematch.
In the women’s event, the match between Sakkari of Greece and Andreescu of Canada was worth watching. The two ladies spent over 3 and a half hours on court together, with the second set alone taking almost 90 minutes.
The Canadian took the first set for herself in a shortened game, while the Greek enjoyed the same format in the second act. The third set was already won by the world number 18 Sakkari 6::3 and she can look forward to facing Karolina Pliskova.
She has been playing great tennis since her heart attack in the second round against Anisimova. She didn’t let her opponent take a set from her this time either. The Russian Pavlyuchenkova defeated the seeded and world number four 7::5, 6::4 and saved around two hours on court compared to her Greek opponent.
The second quarter-final was formed between Emma Raducanova and Belinda Bencic. Only 18 years old, Raducan absolutely demolished the last home hope, Shelby Rogers, and moved on after a 6: 2, 6: 1 “dry shirt” result.
Bencic’s match with Poland’s Świąteková was a bit more hard fought, as only the first set lasted 86 minutes (Raducan’s entire match lasted 67 minutes – ed.). But the Olympic gold medallist managed to win the critical tiebreak by 14:12 and took the second set with a score of 6:3.
We know the last eight in the men’s and women’s section. During Tuesday’s programme Barbora Krejcikova will take to the court again, facing Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.
